On 18 June, the International Commission against the Death Penalty (ICDP) is organizing a Side-Event on the 25th anniversary of the adoption of the Second Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, aiming at the abolition of the death penalty. The event is co-sponsored by Argentina, Belgium, France, Italy, Norway, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey, United Kingdom (members of the ICDP Support Group), Moldova and the World Coalition against the Death Penalty (WCADP).
The Second Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1989, is the only treaty providing for abolition of the death penalty of worldwide scope. ICDP, as an official supporter of the campaign led by WCADP, encourages States to ratify the Protocol.
The event will take place in Room XXIV, Palais des Nations, Geneva from 12.30 to 14.00h.
Please see call from UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on all States that have not yet done so to ratify Second Optional Protocol of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights aiming at the abolition of the death penalty made during the UN discussion on 24 April 2014 entitled “Moving away from the death penalty-Discrimination against marginalized groups.”.
