California vote shows tide turning against death penalty in the USA

On 6 November Californian voters chose by a narrow margin to retain the state’s death penalty. The result of the vote is disappointing but the fact that the electorate was fairly evenly split is a significant step forward compared to the 1970s when over 70% of California’s electorate backed capital punishment.

Millions of Californians have now recognized that capital punishment is cruel, expensive, and fails to deter violent crime.
